Opting to bat first, Australia lost Travis Head for 9 and Nic Maddinson for a duck inside the first session. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith added 60 for the third wicket, but South Africa struck back to reduce Australia to 84-4. Matt Renshaw and Alex Carey tried to rebuild before Anrich Nortje removed Carey and Beau Webster. Renshaw and captain Pat Cummins then produced an unbroken 50-run stand. Renshaw remained unbeaten on 46 and Cummins on 33. Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen took two wickets each for South Africa. The second day will start with Australia looking to extend their lead in the contest.
